چکیده

1 Mines ParisTech, Centre des matériaux, CNRS UMR 7633, BP87 91003 Evry Cedex, France [email protected] Flat to slant crack transition can typically be observed in ductile thin sheet materials. The crack initiates perpendicularly to the loading direction from the notch and then turns to 45° with respect to the loading direction during crack propagation. This phenomenon is, however, still not well understood and, so far, attempts to simulate the transition in three dimensions often fail to predict macroscopic loads correctly. In this study an initial attempt has been made to reproduce the flat to slant transition performing an implicit 3D Finite Element simulation via adapting a Gurson-type model. A second void nucleation term for deformation under shear was introduced. The Lode parameter was used here to identify shear deformation. Using this modification the flat to slant transition has been reproduced successfully at loads similar to the experimental results. Further experimental investigations of void growth in the flat and slant crack propagation regime have been carried out. Cracks in Kahn tear test specimens have been arrested in the three regimes and subsequently been observed via Synchrotron Radiation Tomography of the crack tips 3D quantitative void growth analyses ahead of the crack tip in the flat and slant regimes have confirmed the change in fracture mechanisms: void growth in the flat region is substantially higher as compared to the slant crack propagation region.

Forced tearing of ductile and brittle thin sheets.

Tearing a thin sheet by forcing a rigid object through it leads to complex crack morphologies; a single oscillatory crack arises when a tool is driven laterally through a brittle sheet, while two diverging cracks and a series of concertinalike folds forms when a tool is forced laterally through a ductile sheet. On the other hand, forcing an object perpendicularly through the sheet leads to radi...

Ductile Failure and Safety Optimization of Gas Pipeline

Safety and failure in gas pipelines are very important in gas and petroleum industry. For this reason, it is important to study the effect of different parameters in order to reach the maximum safety in design and application. In this paper, a three dimensional finite element analysis is carried out to study the effect of crack length, crack depth, crack position, internal pressure and pipe thi...

Experimental Study of Sable Crack Growth in Thin Aluminium Sheet

Recent failure information from research teams in NASA Langley and others has shown that CTOA based fracture models calibrated on large C(T) and M(T) specimens can be transferred successfully to cracked aircraft fuselage structures for the assessment of their residual strength. A major difficulty that could limit the more extensive use of this failure parameter is its experimental measurement e...

NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF CRACK ORIENTATION IN THE FRETTING FATIGUE OF A FLAT ROUNDED CONTACT

The growth of slant cracks by fretting fatigue of a half plane in contact with a flat rounded pad was studied. The mode I and mode II stress intensity factors for cracks of various lengths and directions were calculated using the semi-analytical method of the distribution of dislocations, and their cumulative effect on the crack growth was investigated using the strain energy density criterion....

Modeling and Experimental Study of Carbon Dioxide Absorption in a Flat Sheet Membrane Contactor

comIn the present study, CO2 removal from natural gas stream has been studied using a flat sheet membrane contactor. A three dimensional mathematical model is developed to describe the process. The model considers the transport of a gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and methane through a flat sheet membrane contactor module. The model is based on the non-wetted mode of operation, in which t...
